V-steaming And Feminine Health

V-steaming is short for Vaginal steaming, and people widely used this practice in ancient times. Another term for this ancient technique is Yoni Steaming, and it is now re-emerging in our modern times. There is a lot of chatter and interest about vaginal steaming on the internet.

For example, Gwyneth Paltrow pointed the benefits and advised women to steam-clean their vaginas. But is that true? If you want to know more about the benefits and drawbacks of vaginal steaming, come and find out.

What is Vaginal Steaming?

Let’s admit it, between menstruation, sexual intercourse, and childbirth; the vagina withstands a lot. When you add changing hormones and pelvic floor issues to the mix, sometimes the vaginal area is anything but comfortable.

Vaginal steaming is an ancient natural cure for cleansing the vagina and the uterus, regulating menstruation, and reducing bloating and cramps. After receiving high praise on Gwyneth Paltrow’s website Goop, the practice became popular among many spas.

“You sit on what is essentially a mini-throne, and a combination of infrared and mugwort steam cleanses your uterus, et al. It is an energetic release – not just a steam douche – that balances female hormone levels.” – Gwyneth Paltrow.

But other than offering soothing warmth down below, does it work? And is it even safe?

How Does Vaginal Steaming Work?

Vaginal steaming directs herbal steam to your vagina. Some upscale spas offer the process at a heavy price, so you can also do it at home. However, most doctors do not recommend it. The process is pretty easy. You sit or squat over a container of herbal-infused steam.

Herbs that are often used alone or in combinations are:

  • Mugwort
  • Wormwood
  • Camomile
  • Calendula
  • Basil
  • Oregano

Most spas have a special seat (as Paltrow would say, “the throne”). A towel or cloth is used to cover the legs so that no steam gets leaked out.

Can’t Visit a spa? Give it a try at Home

Following is the best and easiest way to make vaginal steam at home. The average session takes 20 to 60 minutes, but I recommend that the steaming session be less than 25 minutes.

  1. Add about a cup of your selected herbs to a hot water basin.
  2. Let herbs steep for at least one minute.
  3. Remove your clothes from the waist down.
  4. Stand or squat over the basin directly. Some prefer putting the tank in the toilet and then sitting on the toilet.
  5. Wrap a towel around your waist and legs to avoid escaping the steam.

The steam can cool sooner, depending on how hot the water is. But before you try it yourself, you will want to consider its supposed benefits and possible safety issues.

Benefits of Vaginal Steaming

Vaginal steaming has advantages and disadvantages. Many of the supposed benefits are not science proven so practice caution when trying steaming.

V-steaming supposedly alleviates:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Vaginal infection
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Digestive problems
  • Generalized pain

A woman who battled infertility says vaginal steaming helped conceive. Marita Brooks, 30, was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which led to infertility. After six sessions of vaginal steaming, she conceived her first child.

We read stories like this, and in some cases, v-steaming helps people in different ways. In the case above, it helped with “curing” infertility. You might ask yourself, is this the case for all women? No, that is not the case.

Many women report they enjoyed next-level comfort and relief from vaginal steaming sessions. Vaginal steaming cleans the vagina, uterus, and entire reproductive tract as a natural remedy, although the claims don’t stop there. But most evidence of proven health and fertility by v-steaming are not science-backed.

As the supposed benefits of vaginal steaming are not scientifically proven. Hence, there are chances that it won’t balance any hormones, and it can mess with your vagege’s good bacteria. The hormone factory is located in the ovary, so steaming your vagina won’t help with stabilizing hormones. Moreover, the vagina is a self-cleaning machine. We don’t need to take any actions to make it cleaner because it will ultimately dry up vaginal tissue and the effects of good bacteria down there.

Things you Need to Keep in Mind

The vagina is a self-cleaning organ of our body that regularly maintains pH balance. So with such an extraordinary feature, any additional interventions, such as vaginal steaming or douching, are not necessary to maintain vaginal health.

The best way to keep the vagina healthy is to keep it clean, dry, and free of perfumes. Therefore, most people should not try vaginal steaming. If they do try it, it is best to exercise extreme caution to reduce the risk of burns and infections.

We never know how hot the steam would be, so there are chances that it can burn the sensitive and delicate vaginal tissue. We will recommend that if you don’t know how to do it properly, go to a spa center.

The Bottom Line

V-steaming does not offer scientific evidence of all of the mentioned benefits it does. Vaginal steaming can make you relax and ease cramping as a heating pad does, but evidence in cleansing the vagina or uterus, improving fertility, and balancing hormones are purely anecdotal.

If you ask yourself, do I need V-steaming? The answer lies in what your end goal is.

The way I see it is like the difference between Physiotherapy vs. Massage. If you like to relax your muscles and feel good, then you go to regular massage therapy. If you have a specific problem with a specific muscle or area of the body, then you go to physiotherapy massage. The same idea can be applied to V-steaming.

Evidence shows that it offers better blood flow to the vagina, which means yoni steaming has general benefits to the vaginal organ. If you want to alleviate pain and reduce cramps, then yoni steaming is for you. If you want to increase the chance for fertility, v-steam might not be for you. You should look for a specialist that will help you in a better way.

We also suggest using it in moderation because vaginal steaming sometimes may dry up your vaginal area and increase the risk of vaginal infection.

Herbs may be natural, but they’re also potent. Used topically, it may cause an allergic reaction. There are safer ways to use heat and herbs for period relief. Try using a hot water bottle on your pelvic area and sip a warm cup of herbal tea.

If you want to try vaginal steaming, talk to your advisor or a qualified alternative health practitioner to weigh the pros and cons of your situation. Suppose you are not an expert to try it at home.
